A challenge to shift electricity use from the "Red Hours" 🔴 of the day (dirty times) to the "Green Hours" 🟢 (clean times) for 7 Days.

We  connect a Wi-Fi-enabled "smart globe" to the real-time emissions of your local electricity grid so that you have a light that changes color like an "emissions traffic light" in your home.

Changing the time of day you use electricity for high-wattage activities like EV-charging, baking, HVAC, or clothes drying makes a meaningful difference to your home's emissions.

Why Colored Light Is Powerful 🚦

Did you know that the traffic light system is such a powerful signal to change behavior that when you place a colored light in someone's home signalling emissions, people save energy without even consciously knowing they are doing it?

This is called "ambient signalling," meaning that a message happens in the background if your physical environment without you needing to consciously open an app or laptop. It's powerful. Studies show that ambient light can reduce emissions by 33% and, when combined with a group gamification model, reduce up to 55% of energy used.

California and UK Grid: Big Time of Day Differences

We currently only offer this challenge for California and the UK because electricity-based emissions from these two regions shift wildly hour-to-hour. Sometimes the grid is nearly 100% clean energy powered, and within an hour (for example, at sunset) it can shift to over 90% fossil-fuel based.

Psychology Techniques

Ambient Messaging

A signal or message displayed in the ambient environment such as on a wall or street where all passers-by can see it.

Color Signal

Color systems that signal good or bad performance instantly.

Feedback Loop

A system that measures the environmental impact of an action and displays it with continuous feedback to the actor.

Disclosure

When the government enforces mandatory disclosure of environmental impact in the form of a label or sticker that must be displayed at the point of sale.

Time & Place

A prompt or alteration to the way the person interacts with their immediate physical environment.

Time-Based Challenge

Applying a specific start and end date for a behavior increases people's propensity to commit to the action.
