Hosting a Compost Club: DIY Worm City, Methane Monsters & Sensor Data

In Mission 6 of Earth Doctors, students discover the wisdom of worms and the science behind why food waste creates emissions.

We build a worm farm with a clear viewing window, letting students watch real composting unfold. Each child is encouraged to take home a mini worm farm with live worms, creating a tiny ecosystem they can care for.

To contrast healthy composting with harmful decay, we create a “Methane Monster”—a simple experiment where students place food scraps in a sealed plastic bag and observe how, over two weeks, anaerobic digestion creates methane. This hands-on comparison helps kids understand why food waste in landfills is so damaging, and why putting scraps in the compost bin matters.

Students document which classmates have home composting or food-scrap sorting and take home printable bin signs to support families in building better habits.

This week introduced gamification techniques like color grading, disclosure theory, and comparison.
