Students reimagine their school as an ecotopia as an applied way to learn environmental design and use creative vision.
In this design challenge, students will reimagine their school as a thriving ecological future. Instead of simply learning about sustainability, they will become designers. Their mission is to transform their school into an ecotopia — a place powered by clean energy, filled with biodiversity, designed for health, community, and climate resilience.
Students will develop their ideas over multiple sessions, refining and improving their designs, with the goal of presenting their work in a public school exhibition at the end of the semester or year.
The Green School Design Competition is applied environmental engineering in action. After learning core principles in Lesson 1: Imagine Ecotopia, students use real techniques from architecture, engineering, urban design, sustainability, and place-making to redesign their own school.
This activity transforms imagination into applied design thinking. Students move beyond dreaming about a greener future and begin practicing the tools professionals use to build one.
