A creative construction activity designed to strengthen children and parents' compost sorting habits, providing an ongoing visual cue that reinforces correct food waste disposal behavior.

Students design and construct their own "Compost Creature" using cardboard, paint, recycled materials, and classroom craft supplies.
Each creature is transformed into a hungry compost monster with a mouth for food scraps and a sign encouraging students to "Feed Me Food Scraps!"
Once completed, students practice identifying and sorting compostable materials while learning how food waste can be transformed into healthy soil rather than sent to landfill.
The activity incorporates behavioral science principles including ownership, creativity, visual cues, and repeated practice.
By creating a unique character themselves, students develop a stronger emotional connection to the composting system, while the finished creature acts as a memorable prompt that reinforces correct disposal behavior over time.
To encourage participation and celebrate creativity, students can present their creations and vote on awards such as "Most Creative Compost Creature," with the winning monster receiving a special prize.
